ABS CLASS NOTATION : Maltese Cross A1, Oil Tank Barge, Unrestrictive Service
This barge had been carrying crude oil and is designed with heating coils in all cargo tanks. Due to the expense of tank cleaning, gas freeing and time constraints we had access to only one (1) of ten (10) cargo tank and four (4) of thirteen (13) ballast tanks.
We accessed cargo tank two (2) Starboard and ballast tanks two (2) and four (4) port and starboard. Cargo tank two (2) starboard was the only cargo tank cleaned, gas freed and certified for entry by a marine chemist. Ballast tanks one (1), three (3) and five (5) port and starboard were in ballast and inaccessible during this survey.
As the barge was afloat and ballasted to eleven (11) feet, we were unable to ascertain as to the condition of the underwater hull or the port side of the hull.
We recommend audio gauging the entire hull, ballast and cargo tank areas including all cargo or trunk deck areas and void spaces prior to purchase.
We learned that the ABS class has recently been suspended due to failure to address class survey recommendations as stated within ABS report pages 9 through 13 which we list within our recommendations.
245,364 barrel, double hulled tank barge certified by the USCG to carry grade B and lower cargo in all oceans. The hull is of all welded steel construction with parallel straight sides, modified (spoon) ships bow, deep notched aft with towing skegs. The raised cargo trunk deck, and main or ballast deck is flat from stern to bow. Internal ladder runs are affixed to several locations throughout the hull and within the notch for access to the deck from the outside hull.
There is a deep notch designed into the transom of the stern for pushing with a channel system fabricated into the notch (one each side) to accept the hydraulic rams of an Articulated tug. This system reportedly allows for pushing in up to fifteen (15’) seas.
