What is a barge? Types?

A barge is a capacious, flat-bottomed vessel, usually intended to be pushed or towed, for transporting freight or passengers.  It can also be described as a vessel of state and elegantly decorated for use in pageants. Barges are generally used for transporting goods. Most barges on inland waterways are towed, but some are self-propelled. There are also sailing barges.

In south Louisiana it is usually a long, large, flatbottom boat used for transporting freight and generally towed or pushed by an other craft. Some barges are used as floatable storage for construction projects. Some barges are used as work areas, some for crew housing, and some barges are used to transport wet goods, such as fuel, oil or water. Whatever your barge needs, DAMCO MARINE MANAGEMENT, INC. Is your one stop shop for barge sales and brokering services.
